balboa fine arts facility
This neighborhood arts facility re-purposes the shell of an original 1920’s theater building that had been re-faced several times and fallen into dis-repair. The new use envisions the creation of a 6,500 SF arts center inclusive of a 1,700 SF mezzanine. At the heart of the facility is a high volume 2,000 SF multi-use space designed to function as a classroom, music venue, community movie theater, gallery or display area. Located to the side of the space is a teaching kitchen that can be used as a concession during public events. Two classrooms are located on the mezzanine which also provides a seating area overlooking the space below. The original brick walls will be reinforced, sandblasted and exposed. The roof will be re- constructed using a bow-string truss similar in shape to the existing roof framing. The new street façade uses a combination of a metal panels and colored translucent wall panels to allow diffused light to penetrate into the building.
