Poway Senior and Community Center

Organized around a trellised outdoor courtyard, this new 32,000 SF community center integrates the senior center and community center with an existing swimming pool clubhouse building to become the centerpiece of the Poway Central Park. Designed to take advantage of a slight elevation in the middle of the park, the building is sited to preserve an existing grove of oak trees and provide views to the south across the baseball fields and Rattlesnake Creek and the hills beyond. The facility includes a covered drop-off area and separate entry for the seniors and a dedicated senior lounge with direct access to the shaded courtyard. Activity rooms are oriented to the south with shaded patio spaces extending out and into the grove of oak trees. Two large sliding barn-doors open the end of the multi-purpose room to a small amphitheater. Straddling one side of the trellised outdoor courtyard and patio, a high volume gallery with clerestory windows connects the new building to the existing pool clubhouse building. The new gymnasium is located adjacent to the pool and creates a dedicated recreation wing for the complex. By utilizing exposed steel columns, stained wood beams and trusses, natural stone and vertical ribbed metal siding the building takes its cues from the rural vernacular buildings of Poway.
