SIGNAL HILL LIBRARY
Situated on a split-level site, the two story 15,000 SF library building is conceived as a “reading room in the park” and is designed to maximize views into the park from the first floor library spaces. On the second floor, a 4,200 SF outdoor terrace with separate entrance is designed to accommodate private and public entertainment functions with distant views to Long Beach Harbor. All of the primary public library spaces are enclosed in one large high volume space under a single gently sloping roof plane supporting PV solar panels. References to the rich petroleum history of Signal Hill inform the development of the interior spaces including the dinosaur themed Children’s Area and the oil derrick themed History Room. Additionally, the library includes a 700 SF Learning Center, 1,100 SF Community Room and Administrative Office space for both the Library Staff and Recreation and Community Services Staff. The Teen Village incorporates collaborative study booths and enclosed study rooms with full IT connectivity. All of the reading areas are located along the perimeter glass line and enjoy spectacular views into the surrounding park. Both the Children’s Area and the Adult Reading Area have access to a secure outdoor tree shaded reading patio.
