JOHN D. SPRECKELS CENTER AND BOWLING GREEN
Conceived as a “Pavilion in the Park”, the 8,800 SF single-story adult activity center is designed to establish a visual and functional link between the existing lawn bowling green on the west and Spreckels Park to the east. Accommodating both the senior programs and the needs of the lawn bowling club, the building is organized around the major activity space, a large multi-purpose room with moveable glass walls that open out to the tree-shaded Park Patio on the east and the Covered Porch facing the lawn bowling green to the west. A large broad sloping roof form of exposed post and beam construction floats above this combination of indoor and outdoor spaces. The tree-shaded Park Patio also provides outdoor space for the senior lounge and the special activity room. The Covered Porch, with an outdoor fireplace, provides a shaded viewing area for the lawn bowlers and direct access to the lawn bowling clubhouse room. Heavy timber construction, multi-pane operable windows, fiber-cement board siding, stone and plaster were selected as the primary building materials to relate to the predominately residential context of Coronado Island. Operable windows, sliding and bi-folding doors and large overhangs were employed to take advantage of the mild climate and to maximize views in and out of the building.
